Aeras Africa: Using World TB Day to Spark Discussion About TB R&D

Our South Africa team was out in full force on March 24, speaking at a World TB Day event sponsored by TASK and educating the public about TB at a community event in Paarl. We also helped organize an interview for the South African Broadcasting Company (SABC) with Dr. Florian von Groote-Bidlingmaier, which focused on TB R&D. Out in the field, we shared TB and clinical trial literacy materials with Aeras-supported clinical sites in South Africa, Kenya and Zambia.

On March 30, Aeras, FIND, TB Alliance and PATH collaborated with South Africa’s National Department of Health to host a dinner event with policy makers, development partners and Members of Parliament.

Yvonne Chaka Chaka, a renowned UN TB Ambassador and respected musician, served as the program director for the event. Heidi Albert of FIND made a joint TB R&D presentation covering TB vaccines, TB diagnostics and TB drugs. Other presenters and panellists included Dr. Christo van Niekerk from TB Alliance, Dr. David Mametja of the Department of Health, and the Hon. Steve Mule, Co-Chair of the Africa chapter of the Global Caucus. Nearly all of the 50 attendees stayed well beyond the designated time to continue discussions – a sign that TB R&D is both an engaging and urgent issue for South Africa and beyond.
