Background

The MVA85A single dose booster vaccine candidate was originally developed at the University of Oxford. It is the most clinically-advanced single dose, next generation TB vaccine candidate in the world. Developed as a booster vaccine, MVA85A is intended to increase the immune response in individuals who have previously been vaccinated with BCG. Antigen 85A is found in the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb), the bacterium that causes TB. This antigen is also present in all strains of BCG. Therefore, it is anticipated that by delivering additional antigen 85A, MVA85A will boost the immune system response to MTb in individuals who have already been vaccinated with BCG. The vaccine is delivered using an attenuated modified vaccinia virus Ankara (MVA).
